Folding Knife Course

This is the second recommended course to take after completing your fixed blade knife course. This course is more difficult than the fixed knife course because it requires you to design a knife with all the parts being able to fit into each other. Only then will your knife be able to open and close upon command. You will learn all the steps you need to follow to design and craft a fully functional linerlock folding knife.

Knife folding couse

Building your own liner-lock folding knife is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is an intense three-day course. A maximum of two people can do the course at one time, so as to allow enough individual attention and help with things like fitting bearings. It is preferable that students have some knife grinding experience before attending the folding knife course.

Our Linerlock folding knife course runs over three days and costs R3 800 (US$230). The course is offered at his knife making workshop in Klerksdorp by Andre Erasmus, who is well-known for his unique folding knives.

Andre takes you step-by-step through the process of building a folding knife. From the design, to creating profiles, shaping the liners, profiling the backstrap and blade… to successfully setting up the stop positions so that your folding knife properly stops and correctly locks when you open it.

You will learn how to create hidden pivots, mark and cut the locking bar and how to make the detent work correctly. You also learn how to harden, grind and polish the blade, anodise the liners and do the final fit and finish to produce a professional quality folding knife.

If you want to get started in the knife-making business, we shall advise you on the best equipment to buy, and where to get it from. On the course you will learn what consumables to use at each step in the knife making process. You can buy all the knife making equipment and supplies to set up and operate your own knife making workshop, from Andre at SA Knife Supplies.

Andre is a full-time knife maker from Klerksdorp in the North-West Province in South Africa. He is a member of the Cape Knife Making Guild. Andre has been making knives part-time since 2008. And he has been a knife maker full time since 2015.

He loves building both folding knives and fixed blade knives. Some of his favourite steels are Damasteel, 5160 and also N690. Andre brings an artist’s eye to knife design. And he finds and uses the most interesting and exotic materials for his knife handles and knife scales.

Knife Making Course: Folding Knife

If you are an entrepreneur, you know that your success cannot depend on the opinions

The $79 iWork ’08 appears to be a good deal for anyone needing an affordable office suite for the Mac. Apple has finally added a spreadsheet application.

At first glance, Numbers is an elegant no-brainer for anyone migrating from Microsoft Excel. In the past, many Mac aficionados bought Microsoft Excel because iWork lacked a spreadsheet application.

Course outcome

The course is designed to teach a thorough understanding of the ratios, skills and techniques to craft a hand made linerlock folder knife, with hidden pivots, using the stock removal method.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
  • Design linerlock folder knife handle, blade and backstrap
  • Design locking mechanism
  • Transfer design to materials

Course Outcome

Why do a folding knife making course?
  • Once you have done a fixed blade knife making course, the bug has bitten you! And the ultimate in knife making is to make your own folding knife.
  • Many of Andre’s students have gone on to build knives as a hobby and as a full-time business.
  • It is the ultimate distraction from the daily rat race. Completely taking your mind to a place where it is just you concentrating on creating with steel.

What will you learn?

A liner-lock folder has some unique design requirements to ensure that all the parts fit correctly in both the open and closed positions and that the detent hole in the blade does not protrude beyond the handle. Learning how to do this involved many steps and very accurate work.

In this folding knife making course, you will learn step-by-step how to design a folding knife, plan out the many different components, create each component, and assemble the folding knife so that it opens, locks and closes properly.

Where is the course offered?

The Folding Knife course takes place in Andre’s knife making workshop in Klerksdorp, over three full days. The full course fee is currently R3 800 (around US$230). The course fee includes everything you need to make your own fixed folding knife over the three days. The course fee does not include accommodation, meals, transport, etc.

If you want to stay over in Klerksdorp while doing the course, then we recommend Ukarimu Guest House, run by Karin, Andre’s wife. Course attendees get preferential rates at the guest house.

Included in the course fee
